The longest night of the year marks the beginning of winter!

What happens exactly?

In the northern hemisphere, the Sun’s rays fall at their minimum angle (about 30° in Greece), while the duration of the day reaches only 9 hours and 32 minutes. With the night dominating (14 hours and 28 minutes), the atmosphere absorbs less energy and the temperature drops, officially marking the winter solstice.

Folk wisdom:

“Days grow longer by day,” the elders used to say, noting that after the feast of Saint Spyridon (December 12), the light begins to gain ground. From December 22, the Sun will slowly extend its path until the summer solstice in June.
